"A couple of nights ago I was watching Jimmy Fallon and Anderson Paak performed with the Free Nationals, featuring T.I. I remember being blown away and thinking ‘Wow. This guy is great.’ The next day I was on Spotify looking up new playlists and I came across this one called, ‘Soul Lounge’. I hit shuffle play and Anderson Paak’s song, ‘Am I Wrong’ was the first one to play. I’ve kind of been hooked ever since. It’s the song I’m listening to now. It’s got some soul. It’s really up beat. It’s got just enough energy to get you into this really nice rhythm, especially if you’re walking around the city. It keeps me smiling. I find myself dancing to it as I’m on the subway or walking down the street."
“Okay. Well… I am listening to ‘Don’t Rain On My Parade’ by Barbra Streisand. It’s on shuffle, but it’s definitely on a playlist that I created. The playlist is supposed to pump me up and make me feel really good. And this song in particular makes me feel really good because… Oh, my god. It’s Barbra belting. She’s not going to let anybody stand in her way regardless of anything and I really, REALLY, admire that. Especially these days where I am feeling a little bit underfoot.”
“I am listening to ‘I Alone’ by Live. I just finished a long year abroad. I’m coming home for a bit of a vacation and Live’s music helps me think about where I’m going and what’s next. They’ve always been a go to band for me. Whether I’m feeling like I want to be pumped up or I want to chill out or I’m feeling a little melancholy or if I’m feeling happy even… I feel like they speak to me and to a lot of different aspects of the human experience. It never gets old. This song came out decades ago, but I would still feel stoked to hear it on the radio.”
“I am listening to ‘Freedom’ by Beyonce. I feel like this song gives me the turnup that I need to have a successful evening out on the town. I like the motivational message behind her music in general. That particular song encourages me to never give up, always fight for my dreams, and to always deliver who and what I believe in at all times.”
“I am listening to ‘Best Mistake’ by Ariana Grande. This past year has been full of important relationships for me. The song reminds me that even though some of these relationships have ended, I can still value them because of the direction my life is going in.”

“I’m completely plugged into my headphones whenever I’m on the go. Listening to music prepares me for what I need to do next. It makes me really centered. It can calm me down or rev me up. I’m currently listening to ‘Jay-Z’s ‘Excuse Me Miss’. I’m kind of nostalgic and this song reminds me of middle school summer road trips with my friends.”
“I’m listening to ‘Kiss it Better’ by Rihanna. I’m on my way to work and this song puts me in the right mood for it. That beat. That groove. I love it. I love Rihanna.”

“Right now I’m actually listening to Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers’ song, ‘You Got Lucky’. I’m listening to music on an old iPod. I hit shuffle and it started me off with their song, ‘American Girl’. I’m kind of a fan, so after that I decided to stick with Tom for the rest of my ride.”

“I’m listening to some African music. The artist’s name is P-Square. The song is called, ‘Chop My Money’. I just got off of work. I’m waiting for the train. This song helps me relax on my way home.”

“I’m listening to Big Pun’s ‘You Ain’t A Killer’. He’s one of my idols. He’s an inspirational Puerto Rican rapper. He was the first one to go platinum. He put the Bronx on the map for hip hop and for Hispanic people. I’ve been listening to him all afternoon. I just left the gym and his music keeps me motivated and hyped. It keeps me in the zone. It keeps me going."

”I’m listening to ‘Sandcastles’ by Beyonce. This song has a lot of meaning to me, which I’ll keep to myself, but I can tell you that I love everything about it. The melody. The lyrics. Her voice. It calms me down. She helps keep me humble. I can just sit back, listen to it on repeat, and ride the train.”
”I’m listening to ‘Heathrow’ by Catfish and the Bottlemen. They’re a band from Wales. They’re total indie scene kind of music. The song is really slow and pretty. The lyrics to it are beautiful. It’s kind of a love song and it reminds me of my boyfriend. He’s leaving for London today and I am sad. He’s only gone for a week, but at this moment it feels like a lot. We’ve been together for four months. You get to a certain point where they’re no longer this other person, but they’re part of you. That’s where I’m at.”
”I’m listening to ‘Upgrade U’ by Beyonce. This song is really inspiring to me. It’s about wanting the best for yourself and wanting to be the best for who ever you are trying to pursue. I’m meeting up with a friend… and there’s a possibility of it being more. The song is helping me relax and get in the right headspace.”
”I’m listening to ‘You Won’t Be Seeing Me Again’ by Piebald. I’m trying to do a cover of the song. It’s really dramatic. My whole life I’ve leaned more towards dramatic bands like Interpol and Radiohead. Listening to music has always been a cathartic process for me. It helps me get out whatever emotions are presently hiding inside. ”
”I’m listening to ‘Aboucha Mas’, which is a song on my latest project, ‘A New Kai Genesis’. It’s coming out this summer. The mixing and mastering is already done. I’m now getting all the logistical stuff together. All the songs on the album are about accepting the different parts of yourself and your reality so that you can take control to make your world what you want it to be. ‘Aboucha Mas’ is the climax of the whole album. You’re looking in the mirror and finally coming to the realization that you are all you’ve ever wanted.”
